Sarpatta Parambarai, a movie set in the 1970's North Madras, shows us the fierce rivalry between the Sarpatta clan and the Idiyappa clan. The protagonist, Kaliban, is a Dalit worker in the Madras Port who idolises coach Rangan and dreams of representing the Sarpatta clan as a main event boxer. Directed by one of my favourite directors, Pa Ranjith, who is known for highlighting the troubles of marginalised communities, this film amazed and inspired me. The movie covers political ideologies, romance and revenge. The movie's excellent in every aspect. It felt like every department was competing with each other to see who would perform better. There are only a few movies which manage to impact you in a certain way, and Sarpatta Parambarai is definitely one of those. Although the storyline and setting of the movie are clichés, it manages to move you from within. I once jokingly called this movie a remake of Southpaw but better and I stand by it. The movie takes us to 1970's Chennai and makes us fall in love with its wonderful culture and beauty. The aesthetics and filmography of the movie were top notch as well. As a person who is fascinated by movie theatres and their environment, I can confidently say that this movie would've been better to watch in theatres. Everything about the movie is so simple yet so intriguing. It will have you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what is going to happen next. If you've been searching for a movie night with your friends kind of movie, this is it.
