Crisis Over Human Civilization

Afghani women are burning their college degrees.

cross dressers are fleeing their homes in China.

the number of global rape and domestic violence cases is abominable.

students are cowering under their desks in the fear of getting shot.

gay marriage is legal in only 30 countries out of 195.

These few facts say it all.

Hidden behind their burqas are the intelligent Afghani women,

Cowering under their desks are the future generation of the States,

Hiding their sexuality are those who want to be themselves,

Fleeing their homes are those who don’t fit into the he/she demographic.

What are we doing? We should be ashamed.

That girl could have found the next inhabitable planet. She was shot in her school.

That boy could have been the voice that rose above all else to fight for equality. He was imprisoned

in his country for being queer.

That young girl could have been the next prime minister of her country. She died giving birth to her

rapist’s baby.

That non-binary person could have been the greatest athlete the world has seen. They were beaten

to death due to their name and color of their skin.

COULD HAVE BEEN, BUT ARE NOT.

She loves her child even though he was a result of rape.

She boards the train every morning even though she was assaulted there.

She loves the color of her skin even though she is often discriminated against.

She wants to be educated and wear what she wants even though her religion frowns upon it.

Even though…. even though…. even though.
